XXII. Vegetable Insects

 D. B. Adams and D.G. Riley

Vegetables were produced on an estimated 175,000 acres in Georgia in 1995, with 96% grown for fresh markets. Spring plantings accounted for nearly 80% of the total production. Insect pests cost Georgia vegetable producers a total of $54.5 million in control costs and crop damage, with over $40 million of these losses associated with crop damage. Thrips accounted for the greatest losses across all vegetables in 1995. This is a result of both mechanical damage and transmission of tomato spotted wilt virus in pepper and tomatoes. The beet armyworm was responsible for the most significant losses recorded on a single crop, pepper. Compared to most other vegetable insect pests, thrips and the beet armyworm have placed the greatest strain on insect management strategies in the 1990's, although numerous other pests cause economic losses annually. Other significant pests included corn earworm in tomatoes, sweetcorn and beans, pepper weevil, aphids in several crops, diamond back moth, silver leaf whitefly and cowpea cculio.
