XX. Soybean Insects R.M. McPherson, R.D. Hudson, and D.C. Jones Soybeans were harvested from 310,000 acres in 1994, a decrease of 190,000 acres from the
previous year. Georgia's average yield in 1995 was 27 bushels per acre, down from the all time record 31 bushels per acre in 1994. Soybean prices were up, averaging $6.90 per bushel, making the value of the crop $57.8 million.*
Stink bugs were the number one pest in Georgia soybeans in 1995. Heaviest infestations were in the southeastern and southern parts of the state. Total losses due to this pest were over $2.1 million in 1995, down considerably from
the previous season (3.6 million). Control was good at most locations, but treatments were applied late, or not at all, in some heavily infested fields. Velvetbean caterpillar losses were down significantly in 1995, although
still costing growers nearly $1 million, making this the number two pest. Caterpillar populations were later than usual and thus damage was not as severe as in the previous year, plus statewide soybean acreage was down. Soybean
looper populations, and the resulting losses continued to be low in 1995. Total loss due to this pest was $0.3 million, mostly due to cost of controls. Corn earworm losses were also relatively low in 1995, totalling just over $0.2
million. All other insect pests accounted for $205,000 in 1995. Most of these losses were due to threecornered alfalfa hoppers, whiteflies, beet armyworms, Mexican bean beetles, and lesser cornstalk borers. Most of these pests'
populations were in localized or isolated areas. |
