XV. Peach Insects D.L. Horton, HC Ellis, J.D. Dutcher, and C.E. Yonce*In 1995 Georgia produced and utilized 146 million pounds of peaches with an
average price of $.203 per pound. The crop =s total value was 29.7 million**. Tree survey data is from the 1995 Georgia Agricultural Facts***Peach insect
IPM was generally successful in 1995. Modest losses to arthropod pests were attributed to plant bugs, stink bugs, plum curculio, and borers. Scale populations have built up in the Fort Valley area. This is seldom a major concern
but may become worse in 1996. Mites were reported to be a problem, primarily irritating pickers, in some mid to late season varieties. Leafhopper vectored phoney peach disease remains an important source of loss, especially in
southern Georgia, but satisfactory controls are not available. Utilization or alternate-row-middle (ARM) insecticide application, reducing insecticide use by up to fifty percent seems to be increasing. Control costs indicate only
the estimated cost of material. |
