X. Grapes D.L. Horton, HC Ellis, J.N. All, and J.D. Dutcher In 1995 Georgia vineyards produced and utilized 3,000 tons of grapes.* The average price was
$1,110/ton. The total crop value was $3.3 million.*The grape root borer, which attacks major lateral roots and stem bases, is our most important pest. Green June beetles and Japanese beetles (north Georgia) were occasionally
abundant. Grape curculio and aphids were sporadic, localized problems. Grapes were also damaged at harvest by bumble bees, wasps, honey bees, fire ants and birds attacking the ripe fruit. Stressed vines seem more prone to ambrosia
beetle injury. Vinifera grape plantings in north Georgia suffer some vine mortality from Pierce =s Disease, but there are no controls available for the
leafhopper vectors. Control costs indicate only the estimated cost of material. |
