IX. Grain Sorghum Insects

R. D. Hudson and J. N. All

In 1995 grain sorghum was harvested from 30,000 acres, this was down 10,000 acres from 1994. Yields averaged 37 bushels per acre. The average price for grain sorghum was up to $3.10 per bushel, an increase of $0.60 over 1994 prices.

Chinch bug continues to be the number one insect pest of grain sorghum in Georgia. Sorghum midge plus foliage and head feeding caterpillars continue to cause sporadic but significant injury in some locations across Georgia. Stink bugs and other sucking bugs continue to increase in importance annually.
