II. Apple Insects

D. L. Horton, H C Ellis, and J.D. Dutcher

In 1995 Georgia produced and utilized 28 million pounds of apples. Georgia apples sold for an average price of $0.168/lb. The total value of the 1995 crop was $4.7 million*. There are an estimated 400,000 bearing trees in Georgia.**

Chemical control applications directed at San Jose scale, rosy apple aphid, plant bugs, leafminers, leafhopper, codling moth, mites and leafroller species accounted for the bulk of control costs. Insect pressure ranged from light to moderate. There were a moderate number of mite infestations. As expected, these outbreaks were spotty and sometimes difficult to control. In some isolated blocks, leafroller control was substandard. There are plans to collaborate with North Carolina State University to determine if organo-phosphate resistance is involved. Tufted apple budmoth is our primary leafroller pest. Control costs indicate only estimated cost of material.
